Sialendoscopy approach in treating juvenile recurrent parotitis: a systematic review

Abstract Background Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is characterized by episodes of painful parotid swelling in children. The purpose this systematic review was to determine the diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness sialendoscopy children affected JRP. Methods A literature search performed PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus Cochrane Library until April 2022, without language restrictions or specified start date. Quality assessment using Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results Our included 524 patients 646 sialendoscopies. sample sizes different studies ranged from 3 77 subjects. Most authors under general anesthesia. mean percentage recurrences observed 25.1% (95% confidence intervals) (CI 23.6–26.6). There a statistically significant relationship between number attacks/year ( p < 0.05). according type irrigation/flushing used 22.2% 25.2%, with no differences use corticosteroids alone (25.2% recurrences), plus antibiotics (25% recurrences) saline (22.2% recurrences). Sialoendoscopy has proved all cases be valid method for diagnosis JRP, but it does not allow reliable differential other autoimmune such as Sjögren's syndrome. Conclusion According our results, sialoendoscopy 74.9% effective primary treatment prevention symptoms ductal irrigation did significantly influence prognostic outcome.
